Programs and Events
Events at Key help us form the strong bonds that make our community so unique! Here are just a few of the activities sponsored in whole or in part by the PTA. For more information about these or any events at Key, contact email@example.com.
Fall Fiesta – Held in October, this is the first major event of the school year. Fall Fiesta is a great opportunity to meet new families or socialize with the ones you already know. This is an event for the whole family. In addition to activities for the kids, such as inflatables, face painting, sports, and games, there is a potluck meal where families can enjoy a variety of foods reflecting one of Key’s most important assets: diversity.
Auction - Held in late winter, this is Key’s biggest fundraising event. The auction raises approximately 75% of the PTA’s annual budget, which is used to fund a variety of activities such as Enrichment, Teacher Grants, Fall Fiesta, and Field Day. The Auction is a parent-only event, therefore it is a great opportunity to support Key School while socializing with other parents. Auction items include: donations from local merchants, donations from parents (e.g. tickets to social or sporting events), and donations from Key School teachers and staff (e.g. chances to be Principal or P.E. teacher for a day and special outings with teachers). The teacher experiences are the students’ favorite items! The 2020 auction will be held on _____.
Spring Arts Festival – Held in late spring, this event is a great way for Key students to showcase their talents in front of a warm and supportive audience. Students perform a variety of solo and group acts such as singing, dancing, acting, and comedy. This two-night event is MC’d by 5th grade students, who keep everyone entertained during performance breaks. The event also includes a display gallery for visual arts submissions.
Field Day - Field Day is the most anticipated day of the year for Key students! It is traditionally held in June on the Friday before the last day of school. There are activities such as a dunk tank, inflatables, obstacle courses, and face painting. The outdoor fun is topped off with a refreshing snow-cone on what is sure to be a hot day. In addition to the outdoor activities and dancing in the gym, the students also watch a movie as part of the PTA Character Ed Program.
Restaurant Nights - Held throughout the school year, Restaurant Nights give Key families a chance to socialize over dinner at local restaurants that give a portion of each bill back to the PTA.

Character Education - One of Key’s goals is to develop civic-minded students of high character. We want all students to acquire the beliefs, emotional intelligence, and behaviors necessary to do what is right simply because it is right. To that end, we involve students, staff, and parents in an active Character Education program that includes Character Rocks (a student-run activity), Parent Institutes (speakers and materials on character education topics), and several in-school activities. We promote four character traits: Respect, Responsibility, Trustworthiness, and Kindness. For more information on Key’s Character Ed Program, please go to key.apsva.us/character-education/.
After-School Enrichment - The PTA offers several after-school enrichment activities for Key students. Enrichment classes are a great opportunity for students to learn fun and exciting things in a safe environment. Classes span a variety of subject areas such as sports, music, architecture, and computer programming. All courses are taught by qualified professionals and take place at Key immediately following the end of the school day. Approximately 45 classes are offered each school year: 15 each session (Fall, Winter, Spring). It is important for all children to have enrichment opportunities; therefore, approximately 20 scholarships are awarded each session. Scholarships are furnished by the class providers as well as the PTA. To learn more about the Key School PTA Enrichment Program, please go to em-key.jumbla.com.
Teacher Grants - The PTA has established an Educational Grant Program to help support innovative learning. Teacher grants are available to all Key staff and are intended to enhance the educational experience of the students at Key. Past grants have funded a variety of projects, such as creative classroom seating options, STEM materials, and even a sister school program with a 2nd grade class in Nicaragua.
